Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.littleA really outstanding delftware marriage plate with
an \'angel head\' cartouche on the border with the
initials ‘I. B. M.\' and the date 1709;
probably Dutch, circa 1709, This fabulous plate would have been made to commemorate the marriage or wedding anniversary or some other very important event in the lives of the people whose initials are inscribed on the border of the plate. The apex letter in the triangle of initials represents the surname of the individuals who are to be married, and thetwo lower names the Chrisitan names, with the man\'s Christian name probably the one on the left.
,br> The wide and very attractive border of the plate is decorated with a beautiful \'angel-head\' cartouche with two strange mythical animals as supporters. The form of the cartouche is clearly derived from some sort of heraldic design - possibly a deliberate means of giving extra gravity to the inscription and the event it commemorated.The simplicity of the cartouche in blue on a field of pure white tin glaze creates a design of great aesthetic beauty. Such plates were made in the late 17th and early 18th centuries in both England and Holland but we think this one is certainly Dutch. The plate measures approximately 10 1/8 inches in diameter. The condition is actually very good for a delftware plate over 300 years old. There has been some restoration around the edge of the rim - probably cleaning up some small edge chips or glaze losses. The appearance is now fabulous and the restoration is hard to detect. This plate is wonderful collector\'s or inventory item and a great accompaniment for a small oak table or dresser. Even if you are a dealer buying for re-sale, you will probably keep this plate when you see it up close! You will go a long way to find a better example of early delftware than this!
