Elias Howe Stockwell Brothers Model #1 Antique sewing machine, wood stand,1880:
$177.51

Elias HoweModel# 1, two thread Lock stitch antique sewing machine, oak wood stand

Please do not make an attempt to skip this introduction -to fully understand what kind of machine is being offered for sale today you must read the following :

From the late 1700ththere were a numerous attempts of trying to make a machine that could sew .In 1832 Walter Hunt has invented the first lock stitch sewing machine but he has never patented it . The legend states that his daughter has madea statement that his invention could deprived a lot ofseamstresses who has sewn by handfrom their livelihood and it has made such an impact on him that he has put his invention aside ...

It was Elias Howe Jr. who patented the first ever functional machine in 1846. When Walter Hunthas seen his own idea being \"improved\" by Elias Howe into claimed-to-be-his-own-version of sewing machine , he realized what mistake he has made and together with financial help of Isaak Singer began the process oflitigationwith E.Howe . But they have lost the case because they could not provide sufficient paperevidences to support his seems like undeniable claim .

The Howe patentscontained the three essential features common to most early and modern sewing machines:

1. Needle with the eye at the point. ( also invented before but not patented)

2. Shuttle operating beneath the cloth to form the lock stitch

3.Automatic feeding of the fabric .

The Howe patents were copied by almost every sewing machine manufacturer and majority of them was ending up in court fighting against Elias for his patents infringements. They all had to pay to Elias a royalties for every machine they have produced . On May 18, 1853, Elias Howe granted his first royalty license to Wheeler, Wilson & Company. Within a few months licenses were also granted to Grover & Baker and others ,among them his own brother - Amasa B. Howe. These licenses granted the manufacturer the right to use any part of the Howe patents. When a royalty license was paid, the patent date and sometimes the Howe name was stamped onto the machine. For this reason, these machines are sometimes mistakenly thought to be Elias Howe machines. Howe was also prevented from manufacturing a practical machine unless he paid a royalty to other inventors. Three of the major manufacturers ( Grover & Baker, Wheeler & Wilson , Singer) and Howe has resolved their differences by forming the “Sewing Machine Combination.” Although Howe did not enter the manufacturing competition for many years, he profited substantially from the royalty terms of the combination.

The Elias Howe brother\'s company -Howe Sewing Machine Company was becoming more successful in producing machines with the license from Elias Howe. in 1862 Elias, who by then became very wealthy from licensing fees collected , has offered to his brother Amasa to go into partnership. But their joint venture did not survived because Elias soon left to start another company with Stockwell Brothers- his brothers-in-law. Since Amasa Howe had used the name Howe Sewing machine company (HSMCo) for years, the new company has assumed the name Howe Machine Company (HMCo).So, at the same time two Howe (sewing)machines Companies has been producing machines - HSMCo inNew Yorkand HMCo inBridgeportConnecticut. See pics 1 & 2 attached .The production rate by The Howe SMCo has been slow and only has reached 20000 by the 1871.In 1872 Amasa\'s son Benjamin Porter Howe sold the HSMCo to HMCo. The HMCo has been producing at it\'sBridgeportplant at much larger scale. Their basic machine was a very close copy of AB (Amasa\'s) Howe machine with the exception of shuttle and and lifting mechanism for presser foot, which were based on Elias Howe 1866 patents. Elias Howe has died at age of 48 a year later . After that HMCo continued to be run by Stockwell brothers . After 1867 the Brass medallion with Elias Howe portrait has been put on the bed of the machines . The total of over 1000000 machines has been produced by the time HMCo has closed it\'s door in 1886.

This particular machine has the serial # 900018 and has been produced atBridgeportConnecticutplant any time from 1877 to 1879. see pic # 4

For being over 134 years old the machine is in good condition . When the crank is being turned the machines isfunctioning- needle bar goes up and down and shuttle moves to/from operator easily as intended.

I can offer the number of options to package this machine and It would depends on the new destination location and other factors .

1. Remove the machine head from the wood stand and to pack it together within one carton with a lot ( !!!!) of impact absorption media .The issue here is not the size and weight but the safety ..

2. To do the same process as above but to pack /ship it separately into two cartons . The price for shipping of 2 separate packages could actually be less than in the option # 1 .

3. Or if the destination address would be within the states with the common borders with Missouri , I could remove the machine head wrap it up into soft blankets to prevent scratches to the beautiful wood cover and to drive to the designated place to meet the buyer All what I want for that service is the money for gas /mileage.

About Myself : I am a retired textile engineer and sewing & knitting machines has been a part of my job one way or another . My background in mechanical engineering combined with some nostalgia, passion and plenty of time on my hands has made the great implication on my current activities – Antique and vintage sewing machine restoration.Over the years I have bought, repaired, serviced and refurbished dozens of machines just for myself and for friends , but now when I am running out of space to store them in accordance with their status, I have decided to begin to offer to you these marvels of old engineering at reasonable price

MY PROCESS:In order to retain the authenticity of original time-honored design and those fine details which once embellished the antique sewing machines I am trying to avoid , unless it is really required due to the extremely neglected original condition, any repainting of machine metal parts, steel legs and treadles.Hereis the brief description of my process: If required, I am soaking all moving parts in WD-40 to get rid of that stubborn solidified whale oil, clean surface with Murphy’s oil soap, high speed polish chrome plated parts and apply a thin coat of a mixture of Boiled linseed oil & turpentine on the originally painted parts and re-assemble machine. The gear driven machines are being properly cleaned, greased and oiled, the timing is being checked , bobbin case or shuttle are being taken apart, cleaned and oiled for smooth thread draw, stitch adjusted to be equal on both sides. If appropriate for that particular model/class, machine is being tested to sew at slow and fast speeds and in reverse on numerous layers of denim to assure it is sewing with ease. For machines with motor /light /foot pedal control the following steps are being taken to assure that machine is electrically safe to operate: the motor, pedal, light wires, are inspected for electrical safety and replaced (if necessary) from the coils to the connector. The foot pedals are being cleaned and adjusted for smooth speed control. The machines I offer for sale are electrically safe and fully guaranteed to sew very well. Please feel free to ask any questions.
