  • Sherman Fairchild was one of the most significant inventors of the modern era and undoubtedly one of the greatest American entrepreneurs of all time. His contributions to society are so wide spread it would be hard to see an area of technology where he wasn’t an influence. Companies such as  Fairchild Aircraft, Fairchild Stratos, Fairchild Hiller, Fairchild Industries, Fairchild Camera and Instrument, Fairchild Semiconductor, and Fairchild Recording, to name a few, all were leading innovators in their respective fields. Sherman Fairchild was also a co-founder of Pan American Airlines and American Airlines as well as Director of IBM, a company his father founded..

In the 1930’s one of Fairchild’s pet projects was Fairchild Recording. He was keen on developing new technology for the budding broadcast and recording industries, which he did. Today components such as the 660/670 compressor/limiter and the numerous  equalizers, mixing consoles, line amps, recording lathes, phono cartridge, and broadcast turntables have set a standard of excellence few components have ever achieved. Much of the technology developed by Fairchild Recording was instrumental in the progression of the recording industry and helped lay the foundation of hi fidelity sound.

The Fairchild 411-H transcription turntable was available new in the early 1950’s . It’s design was the culmination of the most skilled engineering staff in the industry at the time, with the creative genius of Raymond Loewy, who today is recognized as  “the father of industrial design”. It is typical Lowey architecture with an outward beauty that embraces its mechanical precision in a streamlined fashion.

The Fairchild 411h is a professional broadcast transcription turntable used by recording studios and broadcast stations throughout the US. Its cost-no-object  design is unique and groundbreaking, its build quality makes similar era components from other manufacturers look pedestrian.  The 411-H was well noted for its extreme speed stability and non existent noise and rumble levels. Its design philosophy embraced the concept of a massive high inertia belt-driven platter with a rubber idler in direct contact with a high grade hysteresis-synchronous motor. This “Turromatic Drive Assembly” set up eliminates any motor-to-table transmission of noise or vibration.  Speed selection is by way of mechanical design, simply twist the knob to engage a pulley for 33 1/3 rpm, 45 rpm, or 78 rpm.

The Fairchild 280a transcription tonearm is the perfect match for the 411H. It too is a Raymond Loewy design, a true work of industrial art, and one of the earliest examples of “form follows function” in the audio field. It is a precision instrument that perfectly manages a very critical point in the sound chain, ultimately improving sound reproduction of the disc greatly, regardless of what phono cartridge you use.

The Shure M3D Stereo Dynetic Phono Cartridge was the Shure Bro’s 1st stereo cartridge, and is an ideal and era correct match to the 411h/280a. This superb stereo cartridge was a main reason why stereo sound was immediately popular. It revealed the sonic subtleties of stereo records, sonically displaying the unique directional sound characteristics of these recording for the first time. Amazingly the M3D had a 20 year production run and even more amazing is it is still sought out and used by audiophiles today. It was an extraordinarily well built cartridge that performs to a level few cartridges can. It is a natural match for many vintage tonearms & turntables. Furthermore, styli are readily still available for this cartridge.

    Speeds 33 1/3, 45, 78 rpm Power 120V 60Hz  Dimensions 21 1/4” x 14 1/4” x 11” H Weight 37 lbs unpacked

Turntable is in great condition. It is operating as it should and sounds great. A brand new belt was installed as well as a new phono stylus, power plug, and foam record mat. Cosmetically turntable and arm are very clean with only minimal blemishes. Plinth does have some scratches and finish wear. I would recommended changing the foam padding in between the mounting board and base of this two piece plinth. Also, the RCA cables are original, should probably be upgrade for optimal performance.
