Early Medieval Copper Repoussé Catholic Churchapplied holy water font/stoup

Middle Ages - 11th to 15th century

Description:

Without question one of the earliest examples of applied holy water fonts, or ‘stoup’, that we have seen or come across. Authentic. This is a museum piece.

Highly detailed decorative catholic church relic depicts a cross or crucifix atop three mounds or mounts with an angelic winged cherub type face/head floating above. The cup or water basin depicts same image of the 3 mounds above at center with what appears to be a star in the sky above. On either side of this are depictions of birds, likely ducks, swans,or type of water fowl.

Dimensions: Height is 9 inches tall. Width is 3-1/2”. Depth 3”.

Condition: Very Good; Structurally sound; moderate oxidation to inside of cup basin (notice two small holes at bottom point). Please refer to multiple photo details provided to determine your own personal assessment of condition.

Backstory:

Private fonts generallyare smaller than the portable ones used in churches. Some were fashioned ingold and silver and ornamented with pearls and enamel. Some have preferablybeen given the shape of a small round basin suspended from a plate fastened tothe wall; hence they are \"applied fonts.\" They are made of allmaterials, ivory, copper, porcelain, faïence, and glazed sandstone.

A Brief History:

The use of holy waterfonts is a very old tradition in the Catholic Church. The earliest wereactually fountains and the Christian faithful would wash their hands and feetin the water before entering the church, likely derived from an older Jewishrite. There is a writing by Paulus Silentiarius from about 590 which describespeople keeping water from one such fountain in pitchers in their homes. The useof holy water developed from the 4th through 9thcenturies.

Stationary fonts inchurches date from the 11th century, and gained popularitythroughout the middle ages. Holy water fonts in a church would be attached tocolumns or walls, or put on top of pedestals.
