Original, 1860’s CDV Photograph of an unidentified Union Civil War Non-Commissioned Officer from the 71st Regiment, New York Infantry. This wonderful CDV Photo measures approx. 2 1/2\" x 4\" (including the original, square cornered, red rule border card mount). The CDV features a full length standing portrait of a fully equipped Infantry Sergeant. The Sergeant stands in a photographer’s studio wearing a haversack and blanket roll, a bayonet sheath at his white belt, and a kepi with a laurel wreath cap badge surrounding the number \"71\". He holds a percussion rifle with a fixed bayonet with both hands. The back of the mount carries the mark of the photographer – Hallet & Brother of New York City.
The Soldier is identified as a Sergeant by his sleeve stripes and although he is not identified by name, the number \"71\" on his kepi and the New York City backmark on the mount lead us to conclude that he was likely a member of the 71st Regiment, New York Infantry.
This rare, CDV Portrait of a Union Civil War Sergeant is in excellent condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The Photo is clean and crisp and exceptionally well preserved as is the card mount however the mount has been slightly clipped at the corners to facilitate insertion into a Photo Album of the period.
