General Crook\'s Expedition and the Black Hills

General Crooks H.Q. in the Field on Whitewood * #1 Card

This is a rare opportunity to own the original 1876 stereoview / stereograph card of General Crook\'s H.Q. in the field on Whitewood Creek. #1 of a series, photographed and published by S.J. Morrow, Yanton, D.T., documenting the Sioux Indian uprising in theDakota Territory during the Black Hills gold rush. This is the #1 card of the original 31 cards published during this very important and stormy time of American and American Indianhistory.

In my research I did find a duplicate of this card in the Historical Archives and the information recorded regarding the individuals pictured. The following narrative can be found easily by googling, General Crook\'s H.Q. in the Field on Whitewood. The following narrative documents photo, participants and date.

General Crook\'s H.Q. in the field on Whitewood Creek, in the Southern Black Hills, Dakota Territory during the Native American Sioux campaigns, show Crook in plain dress sitting on a tree root with his bearded headquarters staff and enlisted orderlies in worn clothing. The headquarters flag or guidon has a 5 point star sewn on it. Major Thaddeus H. Stanton, the \'Fighting Paymaster\' holds a Springfield rifle to the left of the flag. Other soldiers include Captain George M. Randall 23rd Infantry, Chief of Scouts and Captain John W. Bubb, 4th Infantry, Chief of Commisary. \"
