American Gas Machine No.3 Self-Heating Gasoline Iron - This iron was manufactured by the American GasMachine Co. of Albert Lea, Minnesota. The top of the iron is so marked, plus itis marked “PATENTED NOV. 5, 1912”. This date refers to US Patent No. 1,043,421granted to Hans C. Hanson for improvements in the burner resulting in morecomplete combustion of the gasoline fuel.

The iron has beenthoroughly reconditioned and is in wonderful condition. The bottom is smoothwith only rare scratches around the periphery. As can be seen in thephotographs, the wooden handle is absolutely solid with no splits or cracks. The nickel-plated brass fuel container, about 2 inches in diameter and 5 inchesin length, held about ½ pint of gasoline. Both the pressure-shutoff and the control knob turn freely, and the top of theiron is easily removed and replaced. The length of the base is 7 inches and its width is 3 ½ inches. This iron would make a valuable addition to any collection.

This iron is shown onthe upper right part (middle photograph) of page 111 in the 1994 book “Irons ByIrons” written by David Irons. David rates this iron as an “R3” (This iron isconsidered hard-to-find and you may hunt at shows and flea markets for severalyears to find one). The value index is rated at “V9” ($200-300).
