AUMAN POTTERY 1920's Vase with Spectacular Chrome Red & Manganese Glazes For Sale

The CharlesR. Auman Pottery operated from 1922 to 1937. Its earliest production consistedof salt-glazed utilitarian wares crafted by Paschal Marable, Wendell Richardson,and Wrenn Cole. It was Lorenzo (Wren) Cole who suggested that the Auman Potterymake the transition to the production of art pottery, and he turned some of theearliest Auman art pottery pieces. When Wren Cole left to lease and operate theCarolina Pottery in Candor, NC in 1929, Floyd Hilton from the famous CatawbaValley Hilton family of potters became the principal potter at the Auman shop.

This transitional art pottery vase with an extraordinary dripping glaze was likelyturned by Wren Cole in the 1920’s at the Auman Pottery. A photo of this form appears in the AumanPottery’s Clay Crafters catalogue of the 1920’s where it is listed as style #17and called a “bowl” (probably because vases of this bulbous shape were often referredto as rose bowls at that time), A photo of this style with similar glaze colorscan also be found in Everette James’ book “North Carolina Art Pottery” (seepage 180 – lower left of page). Speakingof glaze colors, today’s vase features a clear lead glaze over the lightMitchfield clay, creating a buff yellowbackground color over whichdripping chrome red and manganese oxide glazes were applied. The eye-poppingresults are certainly spectacular. Thevase stands nearly 6 inches tall with a maximum diameter of nearly 6 inches aswell..It is in superb condition with just a few small and trivial glaze flakesright at the base that likely occurred in the making of the piece as the vase waslifted from the surface of the kiln and a few typical small “pops” from clayimpurities as nearly always encountered and mentioned only for extremeaccuracy. Any bright areas in the photos are reflections off the glossy glazeand not present on the piece itself. A classic form with a rare and interesting0glazecombination making it an excellent addition to a transitional era NC potterycollection - offered with and an extremely low opening offer.
