All sell !ITEM: You are offerding on antique and original Civil War discharge papers for a soldier in the Union Army dating to September 11th, 1865. A remarkable, historical document and wonderful piece of Americana, this document is for a Private Gustavus Paine who was in the 196th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, B Company. The Infantry was slated to serve one year of service, but the war came to a conclusion before they could fulfill their time and were therefore discharged early. This is a fine old relic and wonderful piece of American antiquity. It seems that this bygone document served double duty as someone (perhaps Pvt. Paine?) used the discharge papers to also serve as a written receipt. Scrawled across the document in red ink reads, \"Amt. due on check book $16.00. Paid July (?) 10, 1866\"A brief history of 196th Regiment is as such, \"This Regiment was organized at Camp Chase, O., March 25, 1865, to serve one year. It immediately started for Western Virginia, where it was assigned to the Ohio Brigade at Winchester. Here it remained until July, when it was ordered to Baltimore and assigned to duty in the fortifications around the city, a portion of it being sent to Fort Delaware. The Regiment was mustered out September 11, 1865, in accordance with orders from the War Department.\"To the best of our knowledge, the discharge papers read:To all whom it may Concern:Know ye, that Gustavus Paine a Private of Captain Townsend, Company (B), 196 Regiment of Ohio Infantry VOLUNTEERS who was enrolled on the sixth day of March one thousand eight hundred and sixty five to serve one years or during the war, is hereby discharged from the service of the United States this eleventh day of September 1865, at Baltimore ... by reason of ... (No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist*)Said Gustavus Paine was born in ... in the State of Ohio is 20 years of age, five feet four inches height, ... complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, and by occupation when enrolled, a clerk.Given at Baltimore, MD this eleventh day of September 1865.Measures 8 1/2\" x 11\"CONDITION: Good/very good condition. Given the age of this document, it has held up remarkably well. There are areas of scattered water spots; additional creasing/wear along the original folds; and scattered soiling.
