Fresh from the collection of a longtime Civil War enthusiast is this ambrotype portrait of a Civil War Union soldier. Dressed in a Union frock coat he faces the camera with a fierce gaze and holds a dagger in his left hand. His belt has the oval \"US\" buckle, a cartridge pouch (or cap box), and a pistol tucked into the side. The soldier\'s buttons, buckle, and the revolver are highlighted in gold, with the man\'s cheeks given pink highlights. Piping is visible on the cuffs of his coat. This 1/4 plate ambrotype (3 1/8\" x 4 1/8\") is behind a plate of glass in a metal mat with an oval opening (measuring 2 9/16\" x 3 1/2\"), decorated around the edges with a floral pattern. This fits into a beautiful brown pressed paper case (measuring 3 3/4\" x 4 3/4\" x 3/4\" when closed). The case, mat, and photo are all in very good antique condition, with a few small losses in the paper case that show the underlying wood. The mat is stamped \"DEAN & EMERSON PATENT APPLIED FOR WORCESTER MASS. NO. 46\" which suggests this soldier is from Massachusetts. As we are now amid the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, mementos such as this poignant portrait take on greater resonance as we\'re reminded of the sacrifice of millions of Americans, from soldiers to the president.
