An exceptional 2Gal. Lidded Crock or Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Vermont, ca.1860. The stamp below the rim is cobalt-washed. It reads: \"O.L. & A.K BALLARD / BURLINGTON, VT. This is the mark of the brothers, Orrin and Alfred; they produced stoneware in the Green Mountain State roughly 1856-1867.Cylindrical, shouldered form with applied lug handles; Salt-Glazed exterior, Albany Slip interior. Features a very elaborate Slip-Trailed \"Bird on a Sprig\" design, spanning the entire front surface. This Bird is crested with very heavy body and tail shading; a relatively rare decoration by the Ballards, known primarily for their wispy, brushed florals.Condition: Excellent overall. some inner rim wear, including dings and shallow chips, faint surface hairlines, and a nick under the right handle. The lid is of the same time period and correct in form, size and glaze; possibly not original, but certainly an added bonus. It has a small chip on the button and a hairline on the edge. The Jar and Lid may have been painted in its entirety at one point; there are traces near the rim, stamp and handle. See photos for complete details and close-ups.
