An important 6-Gallon cobalt-decorated Stoneware Crock, signed S.L. PEWTRESS & CO. / FAIR HAVEN, CONN., ca.1880. Samuel Pewtress operated his manufactory on Chatham Street in the Fair Haven neighborhood of New Haven, 1868-1887. Straight-sided, cylindrical form with tooled rim and applied lug handles. Features a very large, and well-proportioned Crested Parrot perched on two leafy branches with a stylized Bird\'s Nest below. Decorated Connecticut stoneware is quite scarce and highly-collectible. This is the largest example I have seen featuring a bird with nest; likely a decorator from the nearby Norton kiln in Worcester, MA.Condition: Some surface discoloration and minor imperfections in the making, most notably stone pops and a separation on the right side handle (left terminal)- see close-up; otherwise in excellent, as-made condition.
