An unusual 19thC. decorated Stoneware Storage Crock or Cream Pot, 3-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, ca.1860. Wheel-thrown, Semi-Ovoid form with squared rim and applied lug handles. Impressed below the rim with a cobalt-washed stamp reading: N. CLARK JR. This is the mark of Nathan Clark who ran the family manufactory in Athens, roughly 1843-1891. Front features a Brushed Floral design in very bold Cobalt. In addition, heavy cobalt accents at each handle terminal. Shiny Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior.
Condition: Two very faint rim hairlines, one at the left handle (w/ rim chip), the other, about 2\" to the left of the maker\'s mark (see close-ups); otherwise Excellent. Also, a shallow chip noted in the right handle. A wire strand has been added at some point to reinforce, but can be removed, if desired. Displays brilliantly; appropriate for any collection of early Stoneware or Americana. See photos for complete details and please consider them as part of the description. An uncommon form by this Upstate NY maker. Quite large; measures approximately 12-3/4\"W x 10\"H overall with a base diameter of 9\". The inner and outer rim diameters are 10-1/2\" and 11-1/2\", respectively; 11.2 lbs.
