This listing is for a very fine circa 1890\'s French figural bronze of a Roman Cavalier on horseback by Emmanuel Fremiet. The bronze measures just less than 15 ¾ inches or 40.5 cm high to the top of his polearm, and is 10 inches or 25.5 cm wide at the base.

The bronze features a figure of a Roman Cavalry soldier on horseback. He dressed in military wear with a sword at his side, a shield on his arm, and polearm in the other. The base is marked "CAVALIER ROMAIN", Roman Cavalry. The bronze has a dark chocolate brown patina or color which is all original to the piece. The base is signed on the other side “ALPH. GIROUX PARIS”.

It is signed on the base "E. FREMIET", this is for French artist Emmanuel Fremiet (1824-1910). He was a prolific artist with many of his works consisting of animal sculptures and military bronzes. He first debuted at the Salon in 1843 and exhibited regularly throughout his life. He is most famous for his sculpture of Joan of Arc in Paris (and its "sister" statues in Philadelphia and Portland, Oregon) and the monument to Ferdinand de Lesseps in Suez. Please reference Bronzes of the 19th Century by Peter Kjellberg pages 327.

The condition of the bronze is as follows; there are minor variations to the patina, and the tip of the spear point is broken. Please see the many photographs for more on the look and condition of this fine bronze.
