of the Sharp-Shooters.

Uncommon early portrait by Brady showing subject in uniform of colonel wearing cap with rare crossed rifles insignia and \"SS\" below. Acknowledged as the top rifle shot in the country for 15 years prior to the Civil War, Berdan was a mechanical engineer who invented a repeating rifle, a patented musket ball and, after the War, a twin-screw submarine gunboat, a torpedo boat, a long-distance rangefinder and a distance fuse for shrapnel. He organized the US Sharpshooters by recruiting qualified marksman from many states who then were armed with 5-shot Colt revolving rifles and deployed strategically on the battlefield. Third Corps, Army of the Potomac, the 1st Berdans suffered especially heavy casualties at 2nd Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House. This is a rare, early, color-bordered Anthony CDV from 1861, the series generally has dense rich tonal quality and extremely fine detail as seen here with the elaborate 501 Broadway illustration verso along with text: \"From Photographic Negative in BRADY\'S National Portrait Gallery\":
