Herman E Smith (Uncle Herman)

B Mch 12, 1838; d Oct 7 1864

He was second lieut in the 3rd NY Cavalry and at the time he was shot was serving on Gen Kautz\'s staff as aide to Col West of the 5th Penn. Vol. who was acting Brigadier General at the time. Uncle Herman was carrying orders in the fighting in front of Richmond and also commanding a portion of the line. He was wounded in the back and carried to Libby Prison where he died the same day he was wounded. He is buried in Richmond VA.

He enlisted at Margaretville Del Co, NY August 10, 1861 and re-enlisted Dec 16, 1863. was killed in action on Darbytown Road, VA Oct 7 1864.

Commission to 2nd Lt, 3rdReg\'tNY Calvary signed Horatio Seymour 6/21/1864 on vellum

discharge paper due to reenlistment 12/15/1863

discharge paper due topromotion 7/5/1865, mustered as 2nd LT

Final Statement

The rest of the papers (approx. 23) are an accounting of his estate, payments with revenue stamps, copy of the will, correspondence from the army to his heirs.

All in all it brings a human element to a casualty of the Civil war.

Just added an additional document to the collection , it is a letter from Capt. Fred Martin to ask Lt Herman E Smith, the name of the officer who was mustered out for promotion, thus creating the vacancy that he was promoted too. the information was needed before he could send record of his promotion to Washington. Dated July 14, 1864
