Confederate Ambrotype Quarter Plate Thermoplastic Case Virginia Estate:
$687.00

This is a quarter plate ambrotype from a Richmond Virginia estate, about 4 1/4 by 3 1/4 inches, showing a 3/4 view of a man in a confederate uniform. There is something tucked into his belt, which has been obscured by applied gilding, but which might be a pistol‎, and something is visible beside his left leg, either a sword or the photo stand.

I shot the first photo inside at night, so the color came out too light and yellow, but I left it because it showed his eyes better than any of the others. I shot the other photos outside on a cloudy day, so they accurately show the actual appearance of the image. As you can see the photo is damaged. The photographer varnished the emulsion surface to protect it, but it has caused some sort of chemical reaction in spots that has made the surface flake off, and there are large brownish areas as well. The glass appears black on the back, but by transmitted light is a dark red.

This came from the same estate as the McGehee tintype that I also have listed. The owner said that he had another paper photo of the same person that was identified, but that hasn\'t materialized. I will be happy to pass along whatever information he eventually comes up with to the buyer if they want.‎ I do not know if this even comes from the McGehee side of the family.

.The case has a chip at the clasp as shown in the last photo. It still closes but then pops open a little bit and then is only loosely caught by one of the catches.

I will be happy to answer any questions.

An observant er has messaged me that this and the tintype that I currently have listed appear the be the same man, and after looking at them more closely I agree. That would mean that this is also Edward Glenn McGehee of Charlotte and Prince Edward Co. Virginia. It would be nice to keep them together, so if the same person wins both sales I will be doing a 10 percent rebate on both sales.

************SCANS ADDED*********************It occurred to me that a scan might be better for this image. It looks like my scanner could use alignment- there are some lines that aren\'t in the ambrotype, but I think that the pistol shows up better, and perhaps the buckle is identifiable now.
