Indian Wars Frock Coat - Identified to Colonel of 24th Infantry Buffalo Soldiers:
$2081.56

I can\'t take credit for this find. A good friend of mine who does resale of designer clothes found this in a clothingreclamationbin in SE Pennsylvania a few years back. Indian Wars era frock coat are generally more common than their CW counterparts and I\'ve collected both over the past few decades and have not found a nicer IW frock coat. The condition, identification, service record of the owner, maker, cut all contribute to the desirability of this frock coat, bringing it from ordinary to extraordinary.
This beautiful hand tailored field grade officer\'s frock coat was made in the (then) frontier town of San Antonio, Texas just after the Civil War. It retains numerous characteristics found in CW era uniforms but the 18 button front is regulation for coats in the early years of Reconstruction. The coat is of beautiful striking blue broadcloth with satinoxidizedgreen silk lining. Superb condition overall with no evidence of mothing. The sleeves are lined in striped cotton and the tail pockets and single breast pocket are lined as well (white in tail pockets and polished brown in the breast pocket). The coat is a larger size fitting someone of 38R or 40R in size. The cuffs are functional and the coat retains all 18 buttons in two rows of nine, all four tail coat buttons and all six cuff buttons, closed by hand finished button holes. The buttons are all Horstmann, except for the cuffs which are all NY. They are all early type general service eagles with brass backs not the later tin and more crisp dies.
In addition to the tailoring, Texas origin and overall condition, inside the wear\'s right tail pocket is the name of
Colonel. Ranald S. Mackenzie
24th Inf. Regt
in period ink. Mackenzie served with distinction throughout the Civil War rising to the rank ofbrigadier general being wounded numerous times and earning the nickname \"Bad Hand\" due to a wound that cost him two fingers. At the end of the Civil War Mackenzie returned to his rank of Captainand shortly after promoted to Colonel, commanding the 24th Infantry Regiment, composed of African American (Buffalo) soldiers.
An instant collection centerpiece.
