JOHN BELL Redware Storage Crock; WAYNESBORO, PA; mid-1800\'s For Sale

John Bell established a pottery kiln in 1833 in the town of Waynesboro, Pennsyvania (very near the border of Maryland in south central PA). He continued to produce redware and stoneware pieces until about 1880. Offered at sale today is a lovely John Bell redware crock from the mid-1800\'s standing 7 3/4 inches tall, with a diameter of about 6 1/2 inches at the top rim and 4 1/2 inches at the base. Condition of the piece is quite nice considering that redware is much more fragile than stoneware. There are a few scattered old flakes around the rim area and a few tool marks from the making of the piece as well as a few other abrasions on the back of the crock (zoom in on photo #3). There is also a very tight and stable hairline to the left of the John Bell stamp coming down from the rim about 2 inches (see photo #6) as well as a second very tight and stable hairline to the right of the John Bell stamp coming down from the rim less than 1 1/2 inches (see photo #7). The crock is signed with a 2-line stamp reading \"JOHN BELL\" on the first line and \"WAYNESBORO\" on the second line (see photo #5 for the best view of the stamp). The inside of the crock is glazed with a glossy clear glaze giving a nice warm brown gloss to the interior (this glazing was used to allow liquids to be held without seeping into and through the red clay). Truly a sweet piece, and in much better condition than typically found. Offered with and an extremely low opening offer.
