You areofferding on an early salt-fired vase by North Carolina master potter Mark Hewitt.

DESCRIPTION: This wonderful early piece from MarkHewitt has an impressive bulbous body that connects to a nicely angled neck viatwo raised concentric circles. A wellpronounced rounded rim and seven decorative raised buttons just beneath theneck complete the pot.

Thepitcher emerged from the salt kiln with a stunning array of surfaces colors andtextures. These range from creamy whiteto tan to arctic blue to deep blue/gray… and from rough matte and dry to smoothand glossy. The vase is further adornedwith veiny golden amber drips around its neck as well as melted blue glassaccents around the five previously mentioned raised buttons.

Thishighly collectible pot stands 8 ¾” tall and measures approximately 7” at itswidest. It is in mint condition- nochips, cracks or repairs- and has the potter’s early WMH mark on the bottom

ABOUT MARK HEWITT: Mark Hewitt was born in 1955 inStoke-on-Trent, England. His father andgrandfather were directors of Spode.Between 1976 and 1982, he apprenticed with Michael Cardew at WenfordBridge Pottery and then with Todd Piker at Cornwall Bridge Pottery inConnecticut. Shortly thereafter heestablished his own pottery at Pittsboro, North Carolina. In addition to producing large planters,storage jars, and vases, he makes a full range of high quality tableware. Over the years, Mark Hewitt’s pots havebecome so highly sought that collectors line up for hours to attend his kilnopenings and invariably buy up every last pot.As a result, it is often difficult to find his work elsewhere. Hewitt pots can be found in the permanentcollections of many prestigious museums including the Renwick Gallery of theSmithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and the Mint Museumin Charlotte, North Carolina.
