Glass slide of the SOAKUM concession in the Joy Zone of the Panama - Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, is captioned CAL. EXP. (CALIFONIA EXPOSITION,) ZONE and dates from around 1915. Also known as the African Dip, Soakum was located next to a souvenir shop selling abalone jewelry, the Marine Cafe Restaurant and the Orange Blossom Candy Store, all seen in the image. The glass slide measures 3 1/4 x 4\" and is in good, clean condition. It is shown enlarged in the scans.
The slide is from the estate of a family who traveled to California in 1915. While in California the family visited two fairs running concurrently; the Panama - California Exposition in San Diego and the Panama - Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. The glass slide is captioned in ink by hand and there is no indication that the slide was mass produced.
