Pvt Frank Lewis, Co. A ist Maine Cav. from Orono, Maine .Mustered in Oct 19, 1861 and out Nov 25,1864. Diary is full of entries and contains a large amount of combat information. Sample entries include. Feb 5 - we left camp at one oclock and proceded to Warrenton and from there to Retonton, there to Orleans, and to Marion we captured 6 of Mosebys men and skirmished with them all day. several days of picket duty. Apr 21 - received orders to move out - Two hundred men went to Warrenton but found nothing. May 9 - we started this morning towards fredericksburg, and hit beaver damn station, we had skirmishes all day with the enemy we captured two hundred and 90 of them. We camped at Beaver Dam. We was awaked this morning by the rebs shelling. We started out from Beaver Dam in the advance. We met the rebs and skirmished a while and then charged and routed them. We had three men killed. Col Boothy and two or three wounded. May 11 - we went to the rear of the corps this morning and emncountered the enemy. We skirmished awhile and was repulsed with considerable loss of men. We fell back, 1 man killed several wounded. Thursday 19th - We marched all night we were three and half miles from richmond.one division faught all day long inside the fortifications at Richmond. Crossed the Chicamonga Swamp and moved to james Mill and camped for the night. May 21 - we moved back today towards white horse many of our horses were played out and shot. May 24 - our division moved out in advance today toward Gen Grant we marched about 20 miles. Very heavy cannonading today in the distance. We turned out and marched through Chesterfield and joined the army of the potomac this afternoon. June 2 - we moved out this morning towards barnes Mile. Heavy skirmishing. Chaplin Bartlett was instantly killed. We moved towarda sic Brettons bridge and camped there for the night. June 6 - Was awakened this morning by the rebels shelling us from long range gun, abut four miles off. we lay in camp all day. June 11 - we moved out this morning the 1st division ahead that came across the enimy and had a skirmish all afternoon, we got shelled supporting the battery. June 24 - We left the White Horse today and crossed the sic chickering at the Jones Bridge, we met the enemy and had a severe fight. They flanked us good and drove us back tp charles city C House. Our Col and Maj Ally was wounded and we lost 70 men killed wounded and mnissing. including 11 officers: There is much more fighting all through the diary.
