Identified Quarter Plate Tintype
Addison Cole, Bugler
And Comrades Of the 2nd NY Cavalry
Identified Iside Lid Of Image CaseIf you are a collector of vintage Civil War images then this one is an absolute must-have! This quarter plate tintype features 4 uniformed members of the 2nd New York Cavalry, all identified and armed with cavalry sabers. First is Sgt. Addison Cole of Company H. who is third from the left and holding his bugle on his knee. Cole originally served with the 10th NY Cavalry as chief bugler, mustering out in 1862, but he re-enlisted with the 2nd NY Cavalry in September of 1864, served as bugler and was later promoted to Sergeant. He was listed as wounded at the battle of Five Forks VA in April of 1865, but apparently recovered from his injuries as he mustered out a couple of months later that same year. Inside the case lid of this image there are penciled IDs of Cole and his three comrades, reading thus (spelling errors and all): \"Members Of The 2nd NY Cav./Adison Cole bugler/Thomas Simmonds/A.L. Cunningham/(next line indecipherable-has been lined out-something ending in what looks to be the word \"North\")/John Hemmel\". Simmonds was listed as having been part of the Unassigned 15th NY Cavalry but was evidently transferred to the 2nd-his official record is incomplete but we surmise he was transferred late in the war (late 64/early 65 from what we can tell). Hemmel was another transfer, coming from the 6th NY Cavalry into the 2nd Cav. in 1865. An interesting tidbit about him is that he is listed as having deserted in July of 1865. This may well have been a clerical mistake; this was at the end of the war, and some boys anxious to be headed home forgot to fill out the occasional piece of paperwork. Cunningham (coincidentally, his first name is also Addison) is listed as having enlisted at age 19 and is the youngest of the four...considering the others were all in their twenties or older we\'re thinking he\'s the extremely young looking lad at far left, and frankly we doubt he was being truthful about his age as he looks to be a lot younger than 19 in our opinion. Lying about one\'s age to join the army (and get the bounty!) was not uncommon at the time; recruiters often neglected to verify age or simply looked the other way when filling quotas. Some of these young boys were often orphans with nowhere else to go who ended up becoming family of sorts with the older soldiers. We printed records for all 4 soldiers and a brief regiment history...they are included.

As you can see, the image is in excellent condition overall; it appears slightly dark but that\'s probably a function of the dark photographer\'s backdrop. It has very nice clarity, no issues we can see, and comes housed in a full quarter plate leather/wood case with brass hinges and a push button latch. The hinges and latch are tight and the case is in nice condition with only minor wear and a few tiny spots-see pics. This is an excellent opportunity to own a rare image that will surely be a centerpiece for any collection of Civil War photography.
