STONEWARE CROCK

What a FABULOUS addition to your collection!!!

This is a Ca 1873-1885
Salt Glazed 4 Gallon Crock.
Cylindrical with tooled shoulder,

desirable eagle motif,

\"E PLURIBUS UNUM\"
Latin for \"Out of many, one\",
The phrase on the Seal of the United States,
adopted by an Act of Congress in 1782.

The maker\'s stenciling on the reverse side,
\"GEO. J. BLACK MEYERSDALE PA,\".
Above the Makers name,
the capacity \"4\",
is framed in a stencil decoration
forming a wreath.

A Very Rare Crock in it\'s own right,
while stenciled eagles appear on
early examples of Pennsylvania stoneware,
this is the only one of its kind I have seen,
bearing the name Geo J. Black.

Stoneware produced by the Black family in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, is some of the most respected of all Southwestern PA wares.
A stoneware pitcher impressed “G & A BLACK” graces the cover of Phil Schaltenbrand’s Book,
Stoneware of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Many examples were featured in The Westmoreland Museum of American Art’s 2007 exhibition, “Made in Pennsylvania: A Folk Art Tradition.”
According to Schaltenbrand’s book, Big Ware Turners, the Black family’s venture into stoneware manufacturing began in the early 1840′s
when James Black began making stoneware in Somerfield, PA, and later, Black’s subsequent partnership with James Hamilton (whose later work in Johnstown was stamped, “HAMILTON & PERSHING / JOHNSTOWN / PA”).
By the late 1850′s, Black’s sons, George and Albert, had taken over the pottery and at some point the ware was stamped with the simple mark, “G & A BLACK.”

Circa 1872 the two brothers dissolved the Somerfield business and went on to establish potteries elsewhere in Somerset County.
George in Meyersdale and Albert in nearby Confluence.

In 1872 George J. Black came from Somerfield and embarked in the manufacture of all kinds of stoneware,
continuing until 1885, when the business passed into the hands of his son, Frank B. Black.
An upstanding citizen, Pottery Manufacturer, Merchant, and Farmer, After the sale of the pottery to his son,
He was elected County Treasure in 1888,
and in 1896, Associated Judge.
He also served as the director of Schools for 8 years in Meyersdale, PA.
