Rare Blue and White Water Hen Staffordshire English Transferware Child’s Plate c1880’s

Aesthetic movement design of castles, flowers and birds round out this fun idyllic child’s tea set from the late Victorian era.

The nice bright blue transfer design is of a water hen or coot at a pond surrounded by flowers, lily pads and grasses, with a pair of swallows flying overhead and a floating scene of a castle by a lake edge. Plate is decorated and edged with a zigzag design and was made from a soft paste ceramic with a thin off white glaze that has a fine crackle. The glaze feels smooth and shines nicely.

The 5 7/16” diameter plate has a blue transfer mark of a belt with the words WATER HEN on it. There is the number 754 in the center of the belt circle.

Very good condition…no hairline cracks or wear.
