This is an outstanding find of a very nice, working, handcarved, 8 day cuckoo clock that was createdbout 45 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, Triberg \"West Germany\" by \"Emil Schmeckenbecher,\" one of thefinest clockmakers in the world! The clock ismade entirely of wood, finished in a deep mahogany shade, andadorned withten large, carved woodoak leaveson the front; another is found on the wooden pendulum. The carvings areexceptional, deep, intricate, and wavy.There is a large carvedwooden game bird to the left of the dial and an equally impressive carvedwooden rabbit to the right. There is a game bag near the bottom of thecase in front and a large wooden deer head at the top with two wooden shotgunsunderneath. I don\'t think the antlers are wood but they sure lookreal.Thedial is surrounded with a wooden mountain horn complete with a mouthpiece and large horn. The dial itself has has a black backdrop andfeatures raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching handsto point out the time.The clock has a fitted wood back and latchessecurely. It easily removes to allow access to the weight driven,mechanical \"Regula\" movement inside the case. A weight drivenmovement simply means that the chains need to be pulledevery eight daysor soto wind the clock and cuckoo activity. Regula makes the bestmovements which is why Emil used them in all of his cuckoo clocks. Thebellow tubes are in goodshape and the tops looknew; sound good too! At the bottom of eachhour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands inthe doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nicesounding chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closingthe door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour andcorrectly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreating to thesafe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! The clock works quite wellhere, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it should though we don\'t know the service history. I did find a service date penciled into the inner part of the back: 12-11-10. Nonetheless, someadjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its newhome...but I doubt it. The clocklooks to have never been used andhas been working well here for over a week. But we always recommend toour clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least onceevery three years. Doing so will preserve a great clock like this one andkeep it running strong. The clock comes complete as shown with two setsof attached metal chains, a woodenoak leaf pendulum, and twoveryheavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I\'ve looked the clock over fairlywell and can\'t find any damage, missing pieces, and very little signs of use. It is a most clock and equally so in size too measuring about 22\" high (not counting the weights orpendulum), about 8 1/2\" at its deepest point, and about 12\" across the top. This clock is just stunningand a great nostalgic look back at the greatness of Black Forestworkmanship. It will certainly turn a few heads when displayed in yourhome, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a breathtaking, highquality, carved 8 day cuckoo clock with a real history behind it. offerwith confidence; youhave found a gem!
