First designed by Carl Zeiss, Jena, in the 1930\'s, the 10x80 80° mounted binocular represents the pinnacle of German optical design. The optical engineers used the entire technologyavailable to them to manufacture what was then the finest operating mounted military binocular of WWII. With 80° angle this binocular was designed specifically for high-altitude air surveillance. Two companies built the 10x80 8 0°. BLC (Carl Zeiss Jena, Germany) and EUG (Optische Präzisions Werke, Poland) in very small numbers. Except for slight internal variations the binoculars were identical and parts could be interchanged. The six element Erfle lens design and huge eye relief (22mm) gives an incredibly wide field of view. Its 5" amici prisms are delicate and were expensive to produce. Incorporating elevator, azimuth and tripod fitting the 10x80 80° was manufactured as one light-weight unit (22 lbs). All lenses are T-coated. The quick acquisition sight is another innovation used on this binocular. It slides on and is adjustable for day or night use. The vintage sturdy wooden tripodis well marked EAF and numbered 7656 and works perfectly. It weighs 11 1/2 lbs and is 43" long closed. The original coatings were primitive by today\'s standards, but still look good and are still effective. There are no visible (to the naked eye) scratches on the lenses. The rubber eyecups look good but are showing signs of drying out. The fact that this binocular is still functioning almost as well as when new is a testament to the fine German craftsmanship. This is a 70 year old German war relic that was used in the war and still provides an astonishing wide-angle view.
