I’m not a collector but I did do some research on this instrument. I did a google search for “vega banjo serial number years” and clicked on the first website returned in the list. According to that website the LAST serial number in 1925 was “67500” and the LAST serial number in 1930 was “95000”. Therefore, according to this website and based on a little interpolation of the numbers, this banjo was most likely manufactured in 1930. However, this is just a guess so PLEASE do your own research. Hopefully the photos will be enough for you to make a decision regarding the instrument’s worth. However, if you have any questions please let me know and I’ll respond as quickly as I can. This banjo is old it has that great \'antique\' smell (I LOVE it… you can practically “smell” a bygone the story of how I ended up with this banjo (if you care to know)…
I had purchased a DIFFERENT instrument (a 5 string banjo… not part of this sale) from a guy who’d listed it on Craigslist. The day after I returned home from picking up that banjo I received a call from him (the seller). He asked if I’d be interested in buying this Vega banjo. Upon hearing it was a 4 string I told him ‘no, thank you’. However, he went on to explain that he really had no sentimental attachment to the Vega banjo and that his motivation for selling it was based on his need for money to help pay his son’s medical bills. Knowing that was the case I left my home, drove back to the city where he lived and purchased the banjo. Please note (as this part is very important to me): I DID NOT attempt to take advantage of someone in need. Rather, I paid the seller the EXACT price he requested for the banjo. The bonus for me was that I also got to meet the man’s son… a fine young luck!!
