The knife/dagger Model 1916 is the last regulation French model of First World War and the only one they could tell to be well builtand made to last. This weapon was offered by the house PRODON of Thiers in 1915 and was retained in 1916 under the name of “couteau poignard Mle 1916 (knife dagger Mle 1916).” [link removed by ]). Itwasnicknamed the \"Avenger of 1870\" in an attempt to wipe away the shame ofdefeat by German troopsduring the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.

This particular French WWI fighting knife was also captured in large number during WWII (1940) and popular withGerman troops inboth regular and elite units. The fighting knife includes the scabbard with metal belt loop. There is little finish left on the scabbard and the blade has discolorations and spots of darkening. The maker mark on the ricasso is the silhouetteof a Chinese head with the word \"BOURGADE\" making the hair plait and was one of 9 or 10 manufacturers of this knife.

While the blade has its patina issues, it retains its original shape and is very well made and sharp. The hardwoodhandle is nicely made and in very good condition. The whole knife istight and complete. While not a knife that never will need an upgrade, it is a good representative example that may have seen service with opposing armies duringWWI and WWII.
