This dish was made to commemorate the USS Maine naval ship.  The ship was sank in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. 

The USS Maine was in Havana harbor  to protect American interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain. The explosion of the Maine on February 15th killed 268 men.  The sinking of the Maine was a significant factor leading to the Spanish American War.

This item has never been used and has been stored on a warehouse shelf for many years.
