SIGNATURE: Straus cut glass from this time period was not signed.

PATTERN NAME AND REFERENCE: The pattern name is Venetian. For reference I have included the picture of a bowl and under plate cut in this pattern from page 12 of the ACGA Straus catalog reprint.

AGE: The reference mentioned above is from an 1893 catalog. This piece was surely made sometime close to that date.

BLACK LIGHT TEST RESULTS: Confirms American Brilliant Period (approximately 1876-1916)

MEASUREMENTS: Approximately 12\" diagonally, 10-3/4\" from side to side, and 3-1/8\" high.

WEIGHT / RING: It weighs a hefty 4.8 pounds and has a nice long lasting ring when tapped.

BLANK / GLASS CLARITY: I\'m unsure how this unusual blank was created, but it is not a figured blank. The glass is bright and clear.

CUTTING DETAILS: The numerous main miters are very deep and the overall precision is superb.

POLISHING QUALITY: The finish looks and feels very crisp. This piece was surely polished entirely by hand.

CONDITION REPORT (ALWAYS VERY PICKY): At first glance, the teeth look to be in great shape, but hiding on the outer underside of one tooth is a 1/4\" sized chip. Down in the corner close to it, is a hard to notice still attached flake that would probably be about 1/8\" to 1/4\" in size if it were to separate. I also spotted one tooth that is about 1/3 thinner than the others that appears to have been repaired on the fan cut below it. Other teeth have probably had some work done on them at one time, but nothing jumps out at you. Otherwise if you look closely there are a few typical scattered pencil point sized nicks on the teeth. Hiding in the pattern area is just a couple of pencil point sized nicks. The bottom shows some minor fine wear scratches on the high spots and the top interior has just a few minor hard to notice scratches. Fortunately none of the infractions mentioned above are easily seen and this bowl still looks great for being about 120 years old.

FINAL COMMENTS: This bowl is what the word brilliant is all about. It has a very vibrant and flashy look. It will display extremely well and could be used for numerous purposes if desired. Give this early ABP gem a good home.
