Rich tonal image, sharp and clean, light aging, decorative page mount shows aging with small tear at top and bottom edges, slight wavy right edge from albumen print portrait of seedsman James Vick most likely extracted from his 1872 seed publication titled “Vick’s Illustrated Catalogue and Floral Guide.” Printed faux signature.

James Vick (1818-1882) was born in England moving with his family in to Rochester, New York in 1833. He trained in the printer’s trade and by 1837 was setting type for local newspapers. He invested much of his own money helping to found Frederick Douglas’s North Star newspaper. He served as editor for the Genesee Farmer from 1849 to 1855 later becoming its owner and publisher. Selling that publication, Vick acquired The Horticulturist and began his own endeavors in flowers and seed sharing. By 1860 he began to sell seeds shortly beginning to publish his renown Seed Catalogs plying both his horticultural knowledge with his expertise in the field of printing illustrating his catalogs with beautiful chromolithograph prints.

This photographic portrait of horticultural meister James Vick is laid down to a frontispiece page from what we believe is the publication “Vick’s Illustrated Catalogue and Floral Guide” from 1872. Two other tipped in images are more commonly found in in the 1872, and by another sources’ recounting, 1873 issues. This photographic portrait would have been take at the same session as one more commonly found images in reproduced catalogs from 1872. We have not seen this variant before.
