Very rare and original, 1880’s Cabinet Card Photograph of Native American Oglala Dakota Sioux Indian Warrior and United States Army Scout \"Woman\'s Dress\" by Lucien W. Stilwell of Deadwood, South Dakota. This wonderful, period, Card Mount Photograph measures approx. 3 7/8” by 5 1/2” and is mounted on its original photographer\'s mount (overall size of mount is 4 1/4” by 6 1/2”). The subject is identified in the negative as \"Woman\'s Dress / He saved General Crook\'s life\". The mount carries the mark of the Photographer - Lucien W. Stilwell.
Woman\'s Dress is referred to by J. G. Bourke in \"On the Border with Crook\" (New York, 1891, page 420) as the Sioux Scout and runner who came out from Spotted Tail Agency to meet General Crook, who was en route to Spotted Tail Agency to have a talk with Crazy Horse in the fall of 1877. Woman\'s Dress said that he had been sent by Spotted Tail and others to warn General Crook that Crazy Horse had asserted that he would kill General Crook in the coming council if Crook\'s words did not suit him.
The Image is a striking, full length, seated portrait of the proud Oglala Warrior wearing a wonderful Hairpipe bone breastplate, beaded moccasins and with a single coup feather in his hair. He holds a wonderful, decorated catlinite long pipe in his left hand.
This rare and wonderful, Native American Lakota Sioux Indian Scout Cabinet Card Photograph is in very good condition. The Photograph exhibits sharp focus and good contrast and tonality although the Image is somewhat light as can be seen in the scans below. Both the Photo and the card mount are clean and crisp and very well preserved.
