Beautiful pair of antique portraits of prominent Colonial Lady and Gentleman from the Colony of Virginia.
The notes on the back identify them as Mr. William Nelson ( President of the Council, 1770-1771), and Mrs. Peyton Randolph ( “Betty” Peyton Randolph). By unknown artist, likely made c. early 1900s after existing oil paintings from the 1770s.
The portraits are laid on cardboards, and framed under glass, and mounted in matching gilt wooden frames. I am not sure if it is print of some sort, but I think it is possibly gouache or watercolor because you can see the brush strokes. I cannot examine them outside of frames without damaging all the paper back. Estate find, sold as is.
Condition: wear and losses to frames, one tear to the paper lining the back of one piece, exposing the cardboard underneath.
Dimensions: framed: H 14”, W 11”
Oval image dimensions: H 8”, W 6”
