- Spider-Man gets TRON-IFIED!
A sequel to TRON, Disney's groundbreaking 1982 science fiction adventure film set in the still-emerging and unexplored realm of video games and digital technology, TRON: Legacy became one of the most anticipated films of the year well-ahead of its debut in December, 2010 -- just one year after Disney's $4 Billion purchase of Marvel Entertainment in late 2009.So it was more than fitting that Marvel's publishing side, better known as Marvel Comics, jumped on the proverbialTron light-cycle ahead of the sequel's release to celebrate not only Legacy, but the first year anniversary of their acquisition by the House of Mouse.
Dividing the duties of cover art between artists MARK BROOKS and BRANDON PETERSON, Marvel launched their TRON: Legacy Variant Covers series, a series of ten (10) Incentive Variant Covers across their most popular titles. Brooks and Peterson's task was to "TRONify" the heroes, to effectively place them within the world of neon lights and computer motherboards that were iconic to the film.
With four Variants debuting in November 2010 and the remaining six in December, the Variants became instant fan-favorites and have remained so ever since, with the top three contenders being Secret Avengers #7feat. Moon Knight in third place, Incredible Hulks #618 feat. Ghost Rider in second and in the "Number One" slot, Amazing Spider-Man #651 featuring the titular hero in a Mark Brooks-designed costume that's still begging for inclusion in the modern day Spider-Verse.
