For sale is this authentic ancient terra sigillata from the Ancient Roman Empire. This incredible fragment dates back to the 1-3rd century AD! This piece is inscribed with a set of ancient letters on the bottom of it (likely a potters mark). The inscribed/stamped letters on the top appear to still be readable, but are difficult to make out in some places. I am not sure their translation. Terra Sigillata is a type of pottery common in the early days of the roman empire. It is a reddish color, with a light shiny coat or glaze on the outside. They were commonly decorated and used as dishes, and other practical items. This piece was found in the 1970-80’s in the farmland in/around the ancient Roman civil city of Carnuntum (ancient capital of Pannonia). Carnuntum is located in modern day Austria. Because we know where it was found, and we know that this city was active mostly in the 1-2nd centuries AD, it can be easily inferred that this piece dates back to then. It was added to a private collection in Vienna, Austria after being found, until it was brought to the open market in 2021 by an artifact and antiquity dealer out of Austria. I purchased it from the dealer, and have had it in my collection since! This is incredible provenance to have with an item like this! Note the condition is not perfect. This is just a fragment of a once larger piece. Please study the photos carefully so that you will have a good understanding of its condition. This would be an incredibly rare opportunity to own an authentic ancient Roman terra sigillata fragment with an original inscription! This would make a great gift, research piece, display/decor piece, conversation piece, teaching tool, or addition to any colleciton! Don’t pass it up!
