Rare Civil War Sixth Plate Tintype
Of A Co. F, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Soldier
*IRON BRIGADE*
Initials on Back Of Image- Possible ID! Very RareThis is one of the scarcer and more desirable historically important Civil War images we have had the pleasure to encounter. This sixth plate tintype features a uniformed member of the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry, a critical part of the famous \"Iron Brigade\" which distinguished itself throughout the Civil War. From Bull Run, where the 2nd WI bore the brunt of an attack by \"Stonewall\" Jackson\'s entire division, to Antietam, where it helped dislodge a significant well-fortified enemy position at great cost, to Fredericksburg, where they held an exposed position exposed to heavy artillery fire, to Gettysburg, where they were the first to meet Heth\'s division, taking almost 30% casualties... to Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor and beyond, the 2nd Wisconsin and their comrades of the Iron Brigade were at the forefront of many if not most of the war\'s most significant battles, with many of their members paying the ultimate price for their gallantry in defense of the Union.

This well composed image features an infantryman wearing the famed \"Black Hat\" bearing the clearly visible insignia \"F\", and \"2\" \"WIS\" with the distinctive plume. His stern expression seems to exemplify the grit for which his regiment was so well known. The image is crisp and is housed behind a patriotic design mat and frame. When examining the image we noticed the letters \"JBL\" or perhaps \"TBL\" are written on the back near the bottom left corner. If these are initials as we suspect, then this may be one of two possible members of company F... there was a Thomas Lyons (no middle initial given, wounded at Gettysburg) and there was a John B. Leidy (KIA Gettysburg). We\'ll include some copies of records for both soldiers and the regiment in case you wish to do some further research. Even if it is neither of these, there are so many Iron Brigade specialists out there that this soldier may be known to some of them by sight. With some research this image could end up being even more significant than it already is! This rare image comes housed in its original full sixth plate gutta percha case, which features a patriotic crossed cannon design (Berg # 1-54, listed as Scarce in its own right!). The case looks nice overall with its only issues being a few minor chips and a tiny missing piece, all on the back of the case (not offensive, see pics). The latch and hinges are tight.
