Superman: Legacy is a new movie to be written by James Gunn is scheduled to be released on the 11th of July, 2025, and will focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, the first part of what Gunn has titled the \"Gods and Monsters\" phase of DCU films. Gunn added: \"Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world. I can\'t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.\"
In the time since Gunn\'s early comments were made, Superman: Legacy has seen a completed script and much of the casting for the film has been completed. Aside from the films headlining characters SUPERMAN and LOIS LANE, several DC heroes never before seen on Silver Screen have also been cast including HAWKGIRL, MR. TERRIFIC, METAMORPHO and GREEN LANTERN (GUY GARDNER). Notably, no casting announcements have been made regarding the film\'s antagonists, or \"bad guys,\" but social media posts have hinted at their identity.
With the next new DCU movie following Superman: Legacy being The Authority, the latter film\'s titular team\'s core members MIDNIGHTER and APOLLO are said to first appear in Legacy -- as the bad guys. Their appearances will follow into The Authority, helping to solidify the continuity in the new cinematic DCU.
The Man of Steel\'s first on-screen encounter with THE AUTHORITY, then, will occur in his own inaugural film. In DC\'s comics, however, that FIRST ENCOUNTER -- which quickly became the FIRST BATTLE -- happened in the second issue of the DC / WildStorm Comics\' crossover series, Dreamwar.
