Fender Showman Amp - either Late 1961 or Early 1962 - Good Working Condition:
$1726.00

This sale is for one either-late-1961-or-early-1962 Model 6G14 Fender Showman Amp. This amp is chassis serial number 00843. It is in very original stock condition exceptfor some replacement of capacitors, resistors and other minor serving over thelast 52 years or so.

The reason I say “either late 1961or early 1962” is that the date stamp on the Tube Chart is not very clear. I could only guess at the letters.

I don’t know much about the historyof this amp. I bought it a few yearsback on Bay as I thought it was a good candidate for a full restoration. I know many people prefer to keep these ampsin original condition. At any rate, Inever did get around to doing any work on this amp. It is just as I bought.

Here are the dates and information I do know abouton this amp:

Power Transformer

67233 (Fender’s designation for thepower transformer on the 6G14 Schematic)

606 140 [606 is the EIA* Code forthe manufacturer of the power transformer - Woodward-Schumacher; the 140 stand for the 40th week of1961 (October 9 - 13)]

*Electronic Industries Association

Choke

125C1A (Fender’s designation forthis transformer on the 6G14 Schematic)

606 - 146 [Again, a Woodward-Schumachertransformer built the 46th week of 1961 ( November 20 - 24)]

Output Transformer

45945 (original 8 ohm Triad)

Treble Potentiometer in VibratoChannel

32137 (137 is the EIA Code for the manufacturer ofthis potentiometer - CTS)

304 - 6142 [the 42nd weekof 1961 ( October 23 - 27)]

Several other pots I looked at hadthe same designation.

So this amplifier could not beenassembled by Fender earlier than the week of November 20 - 24 of 1961. Usually you would expect at least a number ofweeks lag time between the manufacture of component like the power transformeruntil the time the component was installed in an amp chassis at the Fender factory.

On several different websites I havefound a listing of Fender amplifier serial numbers by model and serial number. I have not found this chart on any Fenderwebsite so I do not know the origin of the serial number listings.

Here is what is listed for thisShowman

Showman Model 6G14

00001 to 00350 – 1960
00200 to 00800 – 1961
00800 to 01500 – 1962
01500 to 01800 – 1963

If this chart is correct, then thisShowman Serial Number 00843 would have been assembled in early 1962. However, Iam not sure how much to trust the accuracy of this chart.

It should be noted that at theFender website, they make the following statement:

I have never used a chassis serialnumber before when attempting to date a Fender amp, but I included thisinformation for what it’s worth as this amp does not have a readable Tube Chartdate code.

So it’s either a late 1961 or anearly 1962. Anybody have a guess as tothe two “date letters” on the Tube Chart? The first letter stands for the year.1961 = K while 1962 = L

All three transformers are originalincluding the massive Triad Output Transformer. There is some surface rust on the power transformer. The choke is very clean. The amp has a very recent set of new SpragueAtom 500VDC Filter Capacitors.

I am guessing the handle is areplacement. It looks too clean to be 52years old.

The original power cord was replacedat some point with a 3-wire double-grounded power cord. I do not have the original power cord.

The preamp tubes are a mix ofdifferent brands. The power tubes are aquartet of relatively new looking JJ 6L6GCs.

The amp is quiet at idle. All the controls work as they should. I can detect no operational problems withthis amp.

I am including a new replacementbrown single-button footswitch for controlling the vibrato.
