France 1840: The Minstrel & the Dwarfs, Fantastic Legend in Pictures, Authentic For Sale

Here\'s an authentic Epinal broadside sheet from 19th century France, telling the mythical story of a bagpiper named Anselme and a clan of dwarfs to whom he teaches music as he lives with them underground. The sixteen panels, in bright primary colors, are a pleasure for the eye, and you will be acquiring a precious piece of French folklore, suitable for framing if that\'s your pleasure.

Dimensions are about 15.75 inches by 11.5 inches. These sheets were produced in quantity on poor quality paper and sold door-to-door in the French countryside. This one, happily, has survived pretty well for about 175 years, with some paper toning, edge stressing and edge rips. On the back is a large advertisement for a merchant in Rennes, so this particular sheet may have an origin in Brittany. It\'s all full of life and vigor.
