The Hatfield-McCoy feud is the stuff of legends, and even an award-winning mini-series. On one side are the affluent, politically connected Hatfield's of West Virginia, pitted against their bitter rivals, the McCoy's of Kentucky. The feud was sparked by a lone McCoy's service to the Union during the American Civil War, for which he paid with his life in 1865. Violence again erupted 13 years later, this time over a hog, and both sides escalated the violence.
