Although bismuth is one of the elements ( Symbol Bi, atomic number 83) these crystals are man-made ( ie lab created) .The formation process involves melting and cooling of the bismuth.The \" hopper\" crystal formation( step shaped crystals) results from a higher growth rate of the crystals at the periphery/edges than at the center. While cooling( in air) a coat of bismuth oxide forms. The magnificent rainbow colors we see are the result of light waves being reflected off of this coating , specifically the result of \" thin -film interference\".
This is the nicest material on the market. To the best of my knowledge, and so I am told, there is only one person manufacturing these gorgeous heart shaped items of this quality from such high quality bismuth !!!
