Amazing photo detail, authentic from the WW1 time Period in about 1922, pulled from an historical collection, photo is taped (or glued) to thin cardboard.

Photo illustrates an Old Monk taken by photographercalled the \"Modern Marco Polo.\" Bottom rightis embossed with the photographer\'s name,Merl LaVoy. This is part of an early 1920s collection featuring Romania, and the King and Queen. More info below..

About the photographer:

\"Merl LaVoy(1885-1953) was a photographer and documentary cinematographer who traveled the four corners of the world, earning him the title of “The Modern Marco Polo”.[1][2]

Biography[edit]

Merl LaVoy was born to Charles Henry LaVoy and Luella Easton on December 14, 1885 in the small town of Royalton, Wisconsin.[3]LaVoy\'s father died tragically in a sawmill accident when Merl was 13 months old.[4]His mother married Arthur E. Peck in 1893 and the family moved toTowerin St Louis County, Minnesota. The marriage dissolved and by 1906, LaVoy\'s mother married William Henry Cole in Seattle. LaVoy rarely discussed his youth but in some accounts he claimed that his parent died while he was young and he lived with an uncle in a log cabin in a heavily forested area of Oregon.[5][6\"


About the Queen...

Marie(bornPrincess Marie Alexandra Victoria of Edinburgh; 29 October 1875– 18 July 1938)[note 1]was the lastqueen of Romaniaas the wife ofKing Ferdinand I.

Marie was born into theBritish royal family. Her parents werePrince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh(later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha), andGrand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. Marie\'s early years were spent in Kent,MaltaandCoburg. After refusing a proposal from her cousin, the futureKing George V, she was chosen as the future wife of Ferdinand, then crown prince of Romania, in 1892. Marie was crown princess between 1893 and 1914, and became immediately popular with the Romanian people.

After the outbreak ofWorld War I, Marie urged Ferdinand to ally himself with theTriple Ententeand declare war onGermany, which he eventually did in 1916. During the early stages of fighting, the national capitalBucharestwas occupied by theCentral Powers. Marie, Ferdinand and their five children took refuge inWestern Moldavia. There, she and her three daughters acted as nurses in military hospitals, caring for soldiers who were wounded or afflicted bycholera. After the war, on 1 December 1918, the historical region ofTransylvania, followingBessarabiaandBukovina, united with theOld Kingdom. Marie, now queen ofGreater Romania, attended theParis Peace Conference of 1919, where she campaigned for international recognition of the enlarged Romania. In 1922, she and Ferdinand were crowned in a specially-built cathedral in the ancient city ofAlba Iulia, in an elaborate ceremony which mirrored their status as queen and king of a united state.
