• The image area measures agenerous 31.3 x 52.5 cm [12½" x 20¾"], and the names of the key shipsin the U.S.fleet are printed in the lower margin: the four protectedcruisers USS Olympia, (Dewey's flagship), USS Baltimore,USS Boston,and USS Raleigh, and the gunboats USS Concordand USS Petrel.
• Also labeled is one of the ships in the distance, thegunboat Don Juan de Austria, part ofthe fleetof Spanish Admiral Patricio Montojo, anchored to the east of Cavite.
• The defeat of the Spanish Pacific fleet by the U.S. Navyresulted in the fall of the Philippines and contributed to the finalU.S. victory,making Commodore George Dewey a national hero and helping establish thereputation of the United States as a major naval power.
