This is a rare antique vintage relic reliquary from POPE PIUS the NINTH. The reliquary is actually an Elgin National Watch Co. case for a pocket watch. I have never seen one like this before. If you open up the case there is a paper that is marked Pope Pius the Ninth & on the other side has a post mark dated 1898 and a cut off name \"ntonia\". I\'m guessing possibly the name Antonia? On the other side of the case is a piece of tissue paper with stitches and the relic would be contained under that. I did not take the relic out of the case because I did not want to damage it. I think the actual relic is the square piece of cloth that is surrounded by the hand crocheted linen. I do not see a wax seal. This reliquary measures a little over 1 1/2\" in diameter. It is very unique!
Pope Pius the Ninth was head of the Catholic Church from 1846-1878. He was the second longest Pope in the history of the Catholic Church.
