Height - 9.25” (23.5 - 6” (15 cm) DESCRIPTION:

Very fine terracotta sculpture by well-listed French artist and sculptor,
Jean Pierre Mich (1877 - 1919).

This work is a portrait bust of Chih-Fan and was created in 1910 when Jean Mich was in the Han Yang area of China.

Signed and titled, lower right front:

CHIH-FAN
HAN YANG - CHINE
JEAN MICH

Lower left front with Chinese characters (probably “Chih Fan”). Reverse shows two stamps from Susse Freres Editeurs, Paris, who produced the small edition of this sculpture in several sizes and in bronze, circa 1920.
(Susse Freres is one of the more important Parisian foundries)

Finely sculpted, hand-finished and extremely detailed in a very realistic manner, showing the Chinese subject, Chih-Fan smiling and with a beautiful expression on his face. A rare French Orientalist sculpture.

Jean Pierre Mich
(1871-1919)

Jean Mich born in 1871 in Meechtem, Luxembourg. He studied under Gabriel-Jules Thomas at the Ecole Nationale Beau-Arts in Paris and at the Academy of Art in Munich, Germany. Mich specialized in sculpture and painting and won many awards for his works. In 1910 he went to China where he sculpted images of Chinese subjects. He left China in 1911 due to the Republic revolution and continued his work depicting Chinese, as well as French subjects, back in France. There he received many commissions and much acclaim for his sculpture.

The sculptures of Jean Mich are in many important museums and private collections, including The Louvre, Paris, The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Musee du Luxembourg.

Jean Mich died in France in 1919.The Susse Freres Foundry is the oldest art foundry in France still in business under the name Susse Fondeur.~ please click on image for high definition photos ~
