An Exquisite, Extremely Finely Carved Very Large Antique 18th Century Qing Dynasty (乾隆帝) Cantonese Export Brisé Fan dated to between 1770-1790 - In a Very Rare Early 1850s (1850-1853) Tiffany & Co. (then Tiffany, Young and Ellis), New York and Paris Cardboard Box

Description

This magnificent fan is one of the best export fans I have ever had in my collection and I am very sorry to sell it, but sell it I must.
The fan was made specifically for export to the European market in the second half of the 18th century and is very, very large and extremely finely carved - the skill of the 18th century carvers was never surpassed in the 19th century. The fan ismade of 26 carved and pierced sticks and 2 carved guardsticks that are connected via a pure silk ribbon (the ribbon appears to be original). The two guardsticks are deeply carved with flowers and small birds on a honeycomb-like fine background. The inner fan blades are carved with two round and a central shield-shaped reserve with the monogram MK. The left and right round reserves show a pagoda (perhaps the Pazhou 琶洲塔 pagoda) and houses. All sticks are carved with blossoms, winding garlands and birds. The tips of the sticks show flowers, deer, birds, water lilies etc.
The ring at the bottom was added in ca. 1850-1853 by Tiffany & Co. (then Tiffany, Young and Ellis) probably by request of the owner of the fan. This is why the fan ended up in the Tiffany & Co. box.
The fan measures approx. 10.5\" long and 17.5\" wide at its widest point. The measurements for this fan in centimeters are 26.5 cm long and 44.5 cm wide.
The fan is excellent, complete condition (see photos). A few sticks have tiny areas of missing filaments - nothing to worry about - and the left guardstick has an old joint (such long sticks are always made up of several smaller sections of raw material that were joined together to make up the required length (see last photos).This fan comes in an early 1850s Tiffany & Co. cardboard box. The box lid bears the Tiffany, Young & Ellis, New York and Tiffany, Reed & Cie., Paris label on the inside.
The box is in good condition for its age, but has small age stains on the inside.

Packaging and postage WITH INSURANCE, TRACKING AND REGISTRATION to the UK via Airmail will cost £8.00, within Europe via Airmail £8.00 (ca. 11.00 Euro), overseas via Airmail £8.10 (ca. US$12.50).
I will gladly combine items for shipping (but I require payment before items can be held back for combined shipping). I always refund excess shipping costs.
