It served in France as one of the two infantrybrigades of the 2nd Infantry Divisionand all Marine combat units in World War I wereorganized under the 4th Marine Brigade. The 4th fought actions atAsineDefensive, Belleau Woods, Soissons,St Mihiel,Blanc Mont, andthe Meuse Argonnecampaign.

TheVictory medal awarded to the 2nd Division had five campaign bars. Inorder, from top to bottom, was the Aisne, Aisne Marne, St Mihiel, MeuseArgonne, and the Defensive Sector.
