I always thought this was my Dad's WWII military compass but most internet information states these were highly accurate and mostly used in artillery operations. He was a Combat Engineer in the European Theater so I really don't know if it was his or not. Some loss of paint on metal edges but compass works beautifully (and yes, he taught me how to read it and I'm sorry to say, I no longer remember how to interpret readings).
One great article that said these special purpose instruments combined a clinometer, level and plumb, azimuth scale adjuster assembly, magnetic needle and lifting mechanism and angle-of-site mechanism built into one instrument, with readings for 0-359 degrees and 0-6400 mils. An impressive piece that helped us win the war.
