Here is aWorld War II US Army Axis POW Patch. The patch is embroidered Italy worn by Italian POWs on their prisoner of war issue field jackets. This patch is the larger jacket patch.
POWs wore American uniforms when on work details and the uniforms had to be marked to distinguish them as prisoners. Also, the Italy Patch segregated the Italians from the "real enemies", Germans and Japanese.
The patch appears to have been worn and removed. It is in fair to good condition and is at least 77 years old, probably older.

History: Italians had a little more latitude as POWs in America, especially after Italy capitulated to the Allies in September 1943. My aunt used to go to New Jersey with her girlfriends to visit Italian POWs. Many had relatives in the States, like my Dad who had virtually all of his 1st cousins and 2 uncles serving in the Italian Army, mostly Alpini in Russia, while he was serving in the US Naval Air Corps.
